On Thursday, Nov. 15th, students from two classes at Rio Grande Preparatory Institute served Thanksgiving meals to members of the community.

The City of Las Cruces Community Centers served their annual Thanksgiving luncheon to senior citizens and other guests. Students from RGPI volunteered at the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center, where they served 90 individuals, and at the Munson Center, where they served 370 community members. The students said that they had fun, enjoyed having conversations with the guests, and appreciated the experience of giving back to their community through service.

“I am humbled by the staff and students’ ‘pay it forward’ mantra,” said Interim Principal Rebecca Rodriguez. “RGPI is an amazing school to work at and attend.”

One of the teachers who supervised the group, Kelsey Armijo, expressed the pride she felt in her students and the honor it was to be able to help the community.

“It was a great opportunity for the students to physically give back to the community through service,” said Ashley Weir, an English teacher whose students also participated. “All of the senior citizens that were served at the Thanksgiving luncheon were so impressed with the friendliness and professionalism that the students displayed while serving. The students received many requests to come back soon.”
