Do you have a child in Middle or High School and are they interested in
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math? Then GEMS is for them!

Since 2015, ATEC WSMR has hosted the Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science week-long program for middle school kids from the surrounding area (Las Cruces, El Paso, Anthony, Canutillo, Alamogordo). This year (2019) WSMR is hosting two week-long programs, June 11-15 for Las Cruces students and 23-27 July for El Paso students. Since 2015, 160 students have participated.

GEMS is driven by the overarching mission to interest young people, who might not otherwise give serious thought to becoming scientists or engineers, in STEM careers early enough in their education so that they have the time to attain the appropriate academic training. GEMS goals are to nurture interest and excitement in STEM, implement STEM enrichment experiences that are hands-on, inquiry-based educational modules that enhance in-school learning, and increase student’s knowledge in targeted STEM areas and laboratory skills.

The GEMS program is offered at no cost to students, in fact they receive a stipend for attending and throughout the week, lunches, snacks, and drinks are provided.  Transportation to and from centrally located pick-up/drop-off points in Las Cruces and El Paso is also provided and funded through the National Science Teachers Association. Volunteers from WMSR provide hands-on activities and conduct learning modules, e.g. Robotics, Electronics, Rocketry, Radio Frequency, Jammers, Chemistry, Computer Science and more.  The target audience are those kids that show an interest in STEM and in particular those that could otherwise not participate in summer activities due to financial constraints.

Please encourage your child to apply and have them fill out the application.
