Walking and bicycling to school enables children to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Walking and biking programs increase safety by reducing traffic around schools as well as by teaching kids good pedestrian and bicycle safety skills. The sense of community also builds as children and parents develop walking and bicycling buddies and chat with neighbors on the sidewalk or path.
We’ll be kicking off the celebrations with MacArthur Elementary this Friday, October 1st. They are our “highlight school” this year. Their exceptional staff does a phenomenal job of inspiring and motivating their students. They’ve also received infrastructure improvements on their sidewalks and roads around the school. On a regular Friday, they’re getting 70+ students walking with the walking school bus. Please join us on Friday at Valley Verde Park behind Save Mart on Hadley/Valley at 7:30am. The walk will begin at 7:40am. It may be easiest to either park at the school and walk to the park, or park at Save Mart.
We are proud to announce that ALL 25 elementary schools in the district will be participating in International Walk to School Day Events. We’re humbled by 100% participation, especially in this “not as normal” school year. For the full list, please see: http://www.lcps.net/2021/09/28/safe-routes/ or the attached document.
Jornada Elementary will be walking on Wednesday, October 6th in honor of Dr. Trujillo, and the walk will start, as it always has, at Ben Trujillo’s State Farm Agency. They would appreciate your support there as well.
With the exception of Fairacres and Columbia Elementary Schools, every elementary school has a regular walking school bus (either weekly or monthly).
Please join us for any of these Walk to School Day (W2SD) events, or on the regular weekly or monthly Walking School Buses. For route maps: http://www.lcps.net/public-safety/safe-routes-to-school/
