On May 1, Las Cruces Public Schools proudly hosted the 2025 New Mexico State Seal of Bilingualism and Biliteracy Award Ceremony at Las Cruces High School, honoring 155 graduating seniors for their proficiency in multiple languages. A record total of 162 State Seals were awarded, with seven students earning the distinction in two different languages.
This year marks the highest number of students recognized since the program’s inception, underscoring LCPS’s ongoing commitment to multilingual education and cultural enrichment.
District educators and proud families filled the gymnasium, beaming with pride and joy for their students. From parents and siblings to grandparents, aunts, and uncles, it was a special night for seniors preparing to graduate with a mark of distinction on their diplomas—the New Mexico State Seal of Bilingualism and Biliteracy.
“The New Mexico State Seal of Bilingualism and Biliteracy is a testament to the profound impact of language and its power to connect us,” said Dr. Aine García-Post, Executive Director of Bilingual Education, Translation & Interpretation/Community Outreach. “It is a privilege to recognize the outstanding achievements of our students through this honor!”
The State Seal of Bilingualism and Biliteracy is awarded annually to graduating seniors who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other language. The seal on the New Mexico Diploma of Excellence certifies a student’s ability to use another language meaningfully in college, a career, or in service to their local community. This achievement is also noted on the student’s official high school transcript.
Las Cruces Public Schools offered State Seals that represent ten different languages, giving students the opportunity to expand their communication skills and cultural understanding. Languages offered included:
• English
• Spanish
• Arabic
• Hakha Chin
• Korean
• French
• Romanian
• Russian
• Ukrainian
• Swahili
• Vietnamese
LCPS remains committed to fostering a multilingual environment that reflects the diverse backgrounds and bright futures of its students.
