The LCPS Board of Education recognizes 3rd grade teacher Katey Portillo, for successfully performing the Heimlich maneuver in her classroom, resulting in a safe outcome for her student.
At LCPS, staff go through training each year, to learn what to do in case of an emergency. Last month, during the start of the new school year, 3rd grade teacher, Katey Portillo noticed one of her students appeared to be choking.
Without hesitation, Ms. Portillo successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver in her classroom, resulting in a healthy and safe outcome for her student.
Ms. Portillo's fast actions performing the lifesaving procedure were both heroic and perfectly executed.
Additionally, Ms. Portillo had the support of her students, helping to inform the nurse and provide assistance.
The school Principal at the time at Jornada Elementary, Mr. Robert Estrada said Ms. Portillo is a wonderful example of a thunderbird, and we are fortunate to have her on our team!
Ms. Portillo, we thank you for your quick thinking and heroic efforts to keep students safe.
