Mission
Schools in New Mexico offer a range of health services for students. At Las Cruces Public Schools, the Medicaid School-Based Services Program aims to increase the availability of Medicaid-eligible services within schools, ensuring that children and adolescents enrolled in Medicaid can access necessary health services.
What is Medicaid in schools?
Our school district receives partial reimbursement for certain services provided to our students in the school setting. Parents of Medicaid-eligible IEP and/or Non-IEP students in our district can be assured that the school's Medicaid reimbursement has no effect on their family's personal Medicaid benefits. Rest assured, your personal Medicaid will remain unaffected, as Medicaid services in schools are a separate entity.
The Medicaid School-Based Services (MSBS) program allows Las Cruces Public Schools to receive reimbursement for supportive services offered to students eligible for Medicaid. These services include:
- Audiological Services
- Nursing Services
- Occupational Therapy
- Physical Therapy
- School Psychological Services
- Social Work
- Speech and Language Therapy
- Transportation Services
School districts must use the funds they receive from MSBS to expand and improve health and health-related services for all children in the district. This includes hiring additional staff to provide services, acquiring special education equipment, and supporting projects that will benefit our students.
How can you help?
Children frequently transition on and off Medicaid. Federal guidelines require that schools obtain parental consent to bill Medicaid for services offered to students. By selecting “yes” on the One-time Parental Consent form, you are helping to secure additional funding for our schools. This consent is a one-time agreement and is entirely voluntary. You have the right to revoke your permission at any time. Refusal or withdrawing your permission will not affect services your child receives at school. LCPS will continue to be responsible for providing your child with the required services at no cost to you, regardless of their Medicaid eligibility.
Did you know?
Our school-based Medicaid team is certified by the state to assist with presumptive eligibility for students requiring medical insurance. If a student is facing a medical emergency or if a medical issue is affecting their education, we can help the family apply for emergency Medicaid, which provides coverage for 30 to 60 days while they complete the full application process with the state Medicaid office. Please contact our office for more information.
