Las Cruces Public Schools Social Studies Program

Our Mission

The mission of the Las Cruces Public Schools Social Studies Program is to promote civic competence. According to the National Council for Social Studies, “the primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.” Through access to high quality standards-based curriculum, the culturally and linguistically relevant social studies classroom environment explores the complexity of human experience through problem-solving and analytical discourse promoting authentic and skill-based learning. Las Cruces Public School teachers utilize research-based and proven pedagogical practices that focus on inquiry and historical thinking to embolden civic-minded and culturally literate members of society.

Mandated New Mexico State Standards and Disciplines

State standards set the expectations for achievement in social studies for K-12 students in New Mexico. The standards outline what students should know and be able to do over the course of their progression from kindergarten to 12th grade. The NM State Standards define the content of the Social Studies curriculum in the following disciplines.

Publishers Being Considered for 2023-2024 Social Studies Adoption

publishers

LCPS encourages you to consider the following elements while conducting your reviews.

Content: Instructional materials address the 2023-2024 adopted New Mexico State Social Studies Standards.

Inquiry: Instructional materials provide opportunities for students to engage in the practice of inquiry by asking compelling and supporting questions, asking students to gather and evaluate sources, develop claims, communicate conclusions, and take informed action.

Resources: Instructional materials use a variety of primary sources, maps, charts, visuals, and multimedia content that provide a wide range of perspectives and engage students in critical thinking.

Student Supports: Instructional materials provided strategies and resources for meeting the needs of a range of learners, so the content is accessible to all and supports students in meeting or exceeding the grade level standards.

Materials Selection Process

During the summer of 2022, the NMPED’s Instructional Material Bureau held a Summer Review Institute that conducted a thorough review of publisher-submitted materials for the current Social Studies adoption. Level II and Level III licensed educators from across New Mexico were recruited to complete this review against the state standards and other high quality criteria. Materials were scored and given one of the following rankings: Recommended, Recommended with Reservations, or Not Recommended.

Once this list was released the LCPS Textbook/Instructional Material Review (TMR) Team reviewed materials from the Recommended and Recommended with Reservations options to narrow the selection in accordance with the district policy. Next, each school chose a representative to serve on the Textbook/Instructional Selection Material Committee (TSC) to attend publisher presentations and complete district training as per district policy. The Las Cruces community was then invited to participate in the review process between February 20th and April 5th.

A selection will be made based on data from all stakeholder material review rubrics, and a recommendation will be presented to the Superintendent for final approval. Soon after, a presentation will be conducted at the LCPS School Board meeting to inform the board about the chosen materials. Once the selection is made, LCPS will submit the funding request and beginning in the summer of 2023, educators will begin to receive their materials and training which will continue throughout the 2023-2024 school year.
