ESY Program

As per federal regulation, Las Cruces Public Schools offer Extended School Year (ESY) services to students with disabilities as necessary to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE).

ESY services are provided beyond the normal school year and include special education and related services that are in accordance with the student’s Individual Educational Program (IEP), at no cost to the parents of the student and meet the standards of the State (Authority 20 U.S.C. 1412(a)(1).

ESY services are determined by the IEP team and based on collected data and the individual needs of each student.

18-21 Program

Student will participate in specially designed programs that meet his or her educational and transition service needs through community-based instruction, transportation, work experience, community participation, recreation and leisure, accessing adult services, independent living skills, etc.

Autism Satellite Programs

LCPS has designated certain schools/classrooms as Autism Satellite Sites to meet the learning needs of some students with autism who require specialized settings and instruction. These sites are defined by certain characteristics, as listed below, and as identified by the National Professional Development Center (NPDC) on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), March 2011. Additionally, faculty and related service providers are familiar with the evidence-based practices for working with individuals with ASD, as identified by the NPDC on Autism Spectrum Disorders, 2014 Annual Report.

BICS Program

The Behavior Intervention Classroom Setting (BICS) program is a K-5 program providing intensive support to students with severe behavior concerns from across the LCPS district and meet entry criteria. The student/adult ratio in the two classrooms are very small, with no more than 8 students and 3 adults in each class.  They have a dedicated mental health provider and their own administrator (an intern) who works closely with the building administration.  Student can earn their way out of the program through a level system and have the ability to return to their homeschool once they graduate the program.

Child Find

Child Find for children 3-5 years of age:

Las Cruces Public Schools’ (LCPS) Child Find process, is coordinated by the Special Student Services Department. If you suspect your child aged 3-5 and not enrolled in school, has a disability and may require special education services, contact the Child Find offices at (575) 527-6076.

DDPreSchool

Section 619 of Part B of IDEA, defines the preschool program that guarantees a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to children with disabilities age three through five. Under this program, preschool children who have disabilities are entitled to Special Education and Related Services in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). The identification of young children as having any of the conditions, named in Part B of IDEA including Developmental Delays, are eligible to receive services under Section 619 of IDEA. A team, which includes the parent and professionals specializing in evaluating the needs of young children, will assess and review test results, reports and all other pertinent information. This team must carefully consider all information about the child’s development and medical history before making a decision. Eligibility decisions for young children are complicated and depend on consideration of environmental and language factors, in addition to any testing results.
