Las Cruces Public Schools is encouraging families to learn about hidden "vault" applications that some children and teens use to conceal photos, videos, messages and other content on their phones. While many of these apps have legitimate privacy uses, they can also be used to hide risky online activity from parents, making it important for families to recognize the warning signs and maintain open conversations about digital safety.
The resource explains that many vault apps are intentionally disguised to look like everyday applications, such as calculators or photo galleries, making them difficult to identify. Parents are encouraged to look for duplicate apps, review device settings and permissions, use trusted parental monitoring tools when appropriate, and pay attention to behavioral changes such as children quickly hiding their screens or refusing to share passwords.
The guide also reminds parents that communication remains one of the most effective tools for keeping children safe online. Regular conversations about responsible technology use can help build trust while giving parents opportunities to discuss the potential dangers associated with hidden apps and unsafe online interactions.
In addition, the resource outlines situations that warrant immediate action, including suspected sextortion, online exploitation, contact with adults posing as minors, blackmail, or threats of harm. In those cases, parents should preserve evidence, stop communication with the suspect, report the incident to law enforcement, notify the online platform, and seek emotional support for their child.
