It’s not often that your entire soccer team can brag about scores and grades. For the Las Cruces High School Lady Bulldawgs, their GPAs this semester are as good as their game.
For the past several years, the Lady Bulldawgs had close to eighty percent of the team – sophomores, juniors and seniors – earn academic awards for having a 3.5 or higher GPA. This year, the girls set another record off the field with ninety percent of the team recognized at a recent LCHS Academic Awards ceremony. Four players on the team have a 4.0 or higher GPA.
According to head coach Bobby Bertoldo, many of the players also participate in other groups like FFA, Honor Society, athletic training and other school organizations. Some also maintain part-time jobs.
“Our girls deserve to be where they are,” said Bertoldo. “Each one has put in the effort to excel in the classroom and on the field. I’m excited to be part of this program because the potential we have is headed in the right direction. With a win to start off the state tournament, these girls have the drive to keep that momentum going into the next game.”
The Lady Bulldawgs finished second in district play and are second in goals scored for all 5A schools, with 107 goals. District wide, they also boast the Top Points Player, Leah Tapia, and the Top Assist Player, Maya Figueroa. Tapia and Figueroa are also the number two and number three top goal scorers for the district. The team upset fifth-ranked Santa Fe High on Tuesday in the first round of the state soccer tournament and will head to Hobbs on Saturday for the quarterfinals.
