A Day of Remembrance at Mayfield High School
Today, Mayfield High School came together in unity to honor and remember the lives lost during the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001.
As we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Mayfield Air Force Junior ROTC students, law enforcement, first responders, the Honor Guard, district leaders, members of the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education, and community members gathered with students for the annual remembrance ceremony.
The Las Cruces Police and Fire Departments joined the ceremony to present the colors, while Mayfield Air Force Junior ROTC cadets raised the flags and lowered them to half-staff in tribute to those whose lives were forever changed that day.
Through reflection and unity, Mayfield continues to honor the heroes, first responders, and loved ones we lost, as well as the enduring legacy of courage, service, and compassion they left behind.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Lights. Camera. Thrive! This Thrive Thursday, we’re shining the spotlight on Ms. Monique Letterhos, Media Magnet teacher at Sierra Middle School!
During her 10 years as an educator, including four years at Sierra, Ms. Letterhos has made her genuine love for students the heart of her work. She considers it a privilege to support middle school students as they discover their identities, build confidence, and grow into who they are meant to be.
Through film and media, Ms. Letterhos empowers students to find their voices, tell their stories, and explore their creativity. Her classroom is a place where students’ ideas and experiences matter, creative risks are encouraged, and every student learns that their story is worth sharing.
For Ms. Letterhos, the best part of teaching is simple: the students. The relationships and memories she has built with so many remarkable young people bring tremendous meaning and joy to her career. She is also grateful to call Sierra her professional home and to work alongside caring and supportive colleagues who inspire her to flourish.

Due to inclement weather in the area, Las Cruces Public Schools implemented its lightning safety protocol this afternoon at White Sands School, Mesa Middle School and Organ Mountain High School, which required students and staff to shelter in place until conditions were safe. For Kaylin Norman, Kindergarten Teacher at East Picacho Elementary, teaching is about so much more than academics. It’s about making sure every child knows they belong.
Kindergarten holds a special place in Kaylin’s heart because, for many of her students, she gets to be part of their very first experience with school. She knows those early days can shape how children feel about learning, friendships, teachers — and even themselves as students.
"I want every child who walks through my classroom door to know they are safe, loved, valued, and capable of doing amazing things. I want them to remember kindergarten as a place they were excited to come each morning and where someone always believed in them."
As an inclusion teacher, Kaylin celebrates the different personalities, strengths, backgrounds, and ways of learning each student brings to the classroom. She believes those differences are part of what makes a classroom so special.
A valued member of the East Picacho team, Kaylin’s impact also extends beyond her kindergarten classroom through Student Council, where she helps students discover the importance of leadership, serving others, building relationships, and taking pride in their school community.

The Challenger Learning Center of Las Cruces is giving students the chance to become astronauts, scientists, and engineers!
Students are simulating NASA’s Artemis Program, working together to accomplish an exciting mission: landing Artemis III on the Moon!
Through hands-on teamwork, problem-solving, and STEM exploration, students are getting a glimpse of what it takes to reach the Moon and beyond!
