Congratulations to Emery Guadian, a sophomore at Mayfield High School, for earning Best in Show in the 5th Annual Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Student Poetry Contest for her poem, “The Low Tide in Twilight.”

Emery was recognized during the LCPS Board of Education meeting in April and received a $500 prize for her outstanding work.

Special thanks to Timothy Staley at OMHS for hosting and supporting this year’s poetry contest.
Since its inaugural year in 2022, the contest has awarded $10,000 in student prizes, made possible through a generous anonymous donor and the Karen M. Trujillo Foundation.

The contest honors the legacy of Karen M. Trujillo and continues to celebrate creativity, voice, and student excellence across our schools.

🏅 Thrive Thursday Spotlight: Tanna Miller 🏅

This week, we’re celebrating Sonoma Elementary’s Tanna Miller for her incredible leadership and passion for physical education across LCPS! 💜💪

As both a PE teacher and district PE content specialist, Tanna has helped create new opportunities for students through partnerships with the City of Las Cruces, FIFA/US Soccer Federation, Elite Family Entertainment and local youth sports organizations. She also launched LCPS’ growing Water Safety Program for third graders, helping students build confidence and safety skills in and around the water. Just this week, Tanna led the district's annual 5th grade track meet at the Field of Dreams, an event all LCPS elementary schools look forward to.

Tanna has led the development of K-12 PE instructional guides and proficiency scales, organized districtwide wellness events, strengthened professional learning for PE teachers and helped expand opportunities for healthy living and student engagement across our community.

Thank you, Tanna, for your dedication to helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom! 👏🐯

We never forget the teachers who inspire us. The ones who lift us up when we stumble, cheer us on when things get tough, and remind us to keep going. They don’t stop when the school day ends, they’re always dreaming up new ways to spark curiosity.

Teacher Appreciation Week may be May 4–8, but our gratitude doesn’t fit into just one week… so we’re celebrating our incredible teachers all month long!

Check out this special video from Rene Q. at Desert Hills Elementary and join us in showing some love to the educators who make a difference every single day.

Flashback Friday takes us all the way back to 1929 at Las Cruces Union High School. One of the oldest photos in our collection captures the Bulldawg basketball team during an incredible run, winning four straight games at the district tournament in Deming. This marked their third consecutive Southwestern New Mexico tournament title, capped with a 14 to 23 victory over Deming.

From the yearbook itself: “the hilarious good time had by all who attended made us a jolly bunch for sometime after.”

This is Las Cruces Public Schools, then and now.
